Competing in back-to-back days is challenging.  Competing in back-to-back days in events with the words “World Championship” in the title, and winning, is a whole different story. That’s our winner for Masters Triathlon, Steph Popelar.  In April, the Elizabeth resident went to Spain and took first in her age group of 55-59 year olds in the World Duathlon Championship Sprint. The very next day, she was the best in her age group again, this time in the World Duathlon Championship Standard. A few months later in July, she finished 2nd in the world in her age group in the Sprint Triathlon. Then in September, Steph returned to Spain and found herself as the world champion in the Super Sprint Triathlon. And if all that wasn’t enough, two days later finished with a silver in the Olympic distance. Add it up and she podiumed FIVE times in World Championship events last year. Steph has been an athlete her entire life between basketball, cross country and track and field and is in her high school and college Hall of Fames. Tonight, we honor her in Masters Triathlon.
