Persaeus Gomez

Year: 2023
Award: Wrestling, High School
Location/Affiliation: Pomona High School

  • Three-time State Champion
  • 20-0 record

Winning a state championship is a difficult task. In theory, at least. Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez made winning the 120-pound girls wrestling title look easy. In her four matches, she won by three pins and one major decision. The major decision came in the championship match as she beat Loveland’s Lexie Lopez 14-2 to claim her third title. It was that win that triggered the attention she has earned. She became the first girl since girls wrestling had been sanctioned to win three state titles and was on track to be the first to win four in 2024.

In her three matches prior to the championship, she only allowed one of them to get into the second period. She finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 20-0 record. Calling her the best wrestler of 2023 might not do her justice. She might be the most dominant wrestler in the sport’s brief history. We are proud to honor Persaeus Gomez as our High School Wrestler of the Year.
