Maïra Carreau arrived at DU in 2023, and the freshman from Quebec quickly became a star in triathlon both locally and nationally. Prior to DU, she won the World Triathlon Championship Series Grand Prix in Montreal over the summer, so when she went out in November in Tempe and won the Division I individual national title, it wasn’t exactly a surprise. Overall, had two wins and three podium finishes in three collegiate races in her debut season for the Pioneers en route to becoming the first DU triathlete to win a national title. For that, Carreau also became the first Pioneer to win Division I freshman of the year as well as the first to earn first-team All-American honors. In the NCAA finals, she edged ASU’s Naomi Ruff by ten seconds with a time of one hour, three minutes and 22.6 seconds. Our winner in triathlon, Maïra Carreau.
