Running royalty runs through the veins of Boulder County, and a new queen was crowned this year as Addison “Addy” Ritzenhein was named the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year for 2023. The accomplishment – which celebrates not only the best of the best in their respective sport, but leaders in the classroom and their communities – is just one addition to an already hefty resume for the sophomore. In October, Addy led Niwot to the 4A cross country state championship by winning the individual state title in a new state meet record, a time that was almost 30 seconds faster than the runner up. She followed that up a couple of weeks later by claiming her first national title at the Nike Cross Country Nationals, where she led the Cougars to a runner-up finish. With a season-best time of 16:44.90, Addy ranked No. 1 among all high school runners across the nation throughout all of 2023. We are excited to celebrate Addy as our High School Cross Country winner.
